Boulder Canyon, Colorado - Toproping - Happy Hour Crag - 07/21/01

Today was family top-roping day. We piled the kids in the car, and went to Boulder Canyon with Blair and Donna, meeting Kendall (another Syracuse Univ Outing Club alumni) and Peter on the way. We parked across the street from the Happy Hour Crag - a small cliff with moderate climbs, good for top-roping. The approach was a short but very steep trail with plenty of dirt and loose rocks. It was challenging for the kids, but they did great and didn't complain. We roped the kids up to climb the easy gulley which I'm not sure is rated, probably 5.0.

To the left of the gulley was a couple of moderate climbs, one of them "I, Robot" (5.7), I'm not sure we actually followed one particular route, rather we all wandered up that face and crack whatever way we pleased. Directly to the left of the gulley that the kids were climbing in was a couple of routes in the 5.7-5.8 range (don't have their names). Lastly, we took turns climbing "The Big Spit", a 5.9 with just one tricky move that stumped some of the folks.

We stumbled back down the trail to the cars and cooled our feet in Boulder Creek. We then all caravaned to Boulder and ate at The Oasis - a very nice restaurant with big egyptian fans "rowing" back and forth on the ceiling of the bar area. Ariel and Jasmine passed out before they could order any food, and after dinner, it was too late to wander around Boulder with two passed out children. So we headed back to Fort Collins to the home of our hosts, Blair and Donna.

Some fun climbing, brought the kids along, so we could climb without guilt.
