Potrero Chico - the cliffs

The cliffs of Potrero Chico rise over 2000 feet over the valley and city of Hidalgo. You can't miss them for miles, they are absolutely spectacular and breathtaking. They are shaped like a big drapery of limestone, with canyons of columnular fins, and endless climbing possibilities. Only a small fraction of the area has climbing routes established on it.

When you look at Potrero Chico, there is a gap between the cliffs. Behind the front range and within that gap are where most of the climbs are in various side canyons. Hard to believe that that enormous front range barely has any routes on it yet! There is a road going right into that canyon, since Potrero Chico is a park, so it is easily accessible and has easy approaches. A small pillar a little ways up on the left side of the gap is the top of Snot Girlz (7 pitches), and a small pillar higher up on the right side of the gap is the top of Space Boyz (11 pitches). They seem like a lot of pitches and then you realize there is a vast expanse of cliff still looming above them!

The rock has lots of small vegetation on it, which I discovered later is mostly aggressive. Cactus needles, sharp swordlike leaves, lots of opportunities for scrapes. The rock itself is pretty rough, lots of friction, and also lots of rockfall. Definitely a place for helmets!
