Rancho Cerro Gordo - Potrero Chico, Mexico - February 2002

The campground consisted of small sites surrounded by small trees and brush, a folding chair, and a gravel flat spot for a tent. Don't bother trying to get stakes into the rocky ground. Bring cord to tie around rocks or use a free-standing tent.

The best part of the campground was the pavillion, which had a kitchen with 3 large camp stoves, bins full of dishes, cups, bowls, utensils, pots and pans - everything you need. Also a couple of refrigerators, lots of counter space, storage bins for your stuff, and a couple of sinks. There were 3 bathroom stalls with flush toilets (bring extra toilet paper for when they run out!) and 3 large shower stalls in the pavillion as well. Small dressing space and bench in the shower stalls as well, so plenty of privacy, and the water was nice and hot. The water is supplied by a well in the canyon which makes its way via aqueduct to the camp. The water is safe to drink out of the tap and none of us got sick. A small store inside sold t-shirts, guidebooks and cold beverages. The nicest part was a couch area with magazines, games, a boom box with CDs, and a slack line - it invited socialization.

The climbers we met down there were so, so friendly, everyone was very supportive of each other, happily greeting returning climbers, asking what each other climbed, offering beta, collecting beta, telling stories, etc... It was a very positive experience. We met the nicest people!
